Burial Shroud for the Last of a Line (Family Quilt)
Speculative Design
Physical Computing (Arduino)
Burial Shroud for the Last of a Line (Family Quilt), is a physical object and an accompanying short film that together envisions a world where time, care, and connection are our only lasting legacies. It was originally created for a special NYCxDESIGN Festival 2025 Art x Design showcase, What Comes After No One? Future Artifacts for a Final Generation,
Crafted for the final days of a world where humans can no longer procreate, the piece uses heirlooms, found materials, and salvaged objects to speculate about new ways we might relate to material and aesthetics in the face of impending extinction. With details chosen for their memory, association, beauty, or feel, the quilt conjures a culture that values effort over perfection and sentiment over utility — honoring the act of making as the ultimate expression of love. Embedded with micro-sensors that play recorded messages from already-dead family members, the quilt not only weaves audio and visuals from across time and space, becoming a tender companion and a testament to our shared humanity for the final person on earth.

Questions under artistic consideration:
How might our relationship to humans and to human-made materials change in an era of population collapse?
What is the role of the designer when we can no longer envision a "better" future?
How can we find new ways to combat lonliness?
How do we comfort and care for loved ones across space and time?
